Kurt Spielberg
1928-2009
A dear friend and colleague Kurt
Spielberg passed away, on February 20th, struck by a car on the way to the
Philadelphia Art Museum with his wife
Monique Guignard-Spielberg. A true and
loyal friend, a passionate professional, and the ultimate gentleman, he
will be missed by the very many people who have had the good fortune to
have known him. |

Beloved husband of Monique (nee Guignard). Loving father of Ellen
Spielberg of Conway, MA and James Norman Spielberg of Columbia, SC.
Devoted grandfather of Alexander, Victoria, Michael, Jonathan and
Catherine. Surviving forced labor during WWII, Kurt went on to earn a PhD
in Physics from the University of Vienna. Taught Physics at City College
of New York, before settling into a 5 decade career with IBM, in
Scientific Centers and Scientific Marketing. Recently, he was a Senior
Fellow in the Department of Operations and Information Management at the
Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He was the recipient of
the Higgins Fellowship from Columbia University to do an Assistantship
with future Nobel Laureate Dr. Townes. Unfortunately due to severe
illness he could not use it. A Life Austrian Chess Master, he enjoyed
passing on his love of the game to his grandchildren, with whom he also
shared his insights in soccer (Schetter
).
In
lieu of flowers contributions in his memory may be made to Harvard Medical
School for the Stuart and Victoria Quan Fellowship Fund in
